UMI 233 is a multidisciplinary research unit. The team conducted by Martine Peeters is working on the genetic diversity of HIV and its implication for human health in particular in the field of resistance to antiretroviral drugs. This unit is a WHO reference laboratory for HIV drug resistance and molecular epidemiology. The laboratory developed in Cameroon is also a WHO national reference. The team is PI of international studies on HIV drug resistance in resource limited countries.
With the support of NIH and ANRS the team is conducting reference studies on the origin of AIDS and the risk of emerging new anthropozoonosis. Studies are not limited to retroviruses, for instance the team is leader of an ANR project on the origin and diversity of plasmodium falciparum in non-human primates.
