Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is a major neurotransmitter of the mammalian central nervous system. It is involved in numerous physiological functions including the regulation of mood, cognitive functions, feeding, sleep and pain transmission. Alterations of serotonergic systems have been involved in numerous psychiatric disorders such as mood disorders and psychoses. Accordingly, 5-HT receptors and the serotonin transporter (SERT) are major targets of numerous psychoactive drugs including the majority of currently available antidepressants and atypical antipsychotics. Using functional proteomics approaches, our team identifies signalling networks associated with various 5-HT receptors and the 5-HT transporter and characterizes their role in synaptic transmission and synaptic plasticity, cognition, mood, pain and neuronal survival.
